Victim identified in Rock Island homicide investigation

Police found the man inside a home in the 500 block of 6th Street before 2 a.m. on August 2.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Update Aug. 3 at 4:30 p.m.: 

News 8 received confirmation from Rock Island Police Chief Richard Landi that they are investigating the case as a homicide. He was unable to provide any further information. 

Update Aug. 3 at 4 p.m.:

The victim in the Rock Island death investigation has been identified as Julius Mathews, age 21, of Rock Island.

Rock Island County coroner Brian Gustafson said an autopsy is set for Friday, August 4. The case remains under investigation.

Rock Island Police responded to a call about an unconscious man with a gunshot wound early Wednesday morning.

Inside a home in the 500 block of 6th Street, officers found a 21-year-old man deceased with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

The incident is under investigation by the Rock Island Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division.
